Every time you buy a new piece of clothing, does your wardrobe scream out in protest? With only so much wardrobe space available, one is always on the lookout for storage hacks. But here is the problem. Even if you de-clutter once in a while and organize storage space, how do you keep track of the clothing you have and when you want to wear it?

We may altogether forget some clothing only to discover it a few seasons down the line, and discover that it’s too late for wearing it. Or we tend to buy new clothes only to realize that we already had something for a particular occasion.

From light dresses in the summer to a warm winter jacket, how do you store and organize everything in order? The answer lies in picking the right kind of seasonal clothes, some handy storage hacks and a closet de-clutter exercise, all done with precision and smartness.

To make the best use of all clothes you have, you’ll have to choose the ‘less is more’ concept. You’ll need to free up space in your drawers to be able to see what you own. In order to make that space, you will need to remove the off-season clothing, and bring in those that you plan to wear at the moment.  The good part is thatit will feel as refreshing as retail therapy!

So are you ready to find out more about organizing your closet like never before? Then take out all your clothes, empty the dressers and get started.

Part with whatever you think is not necessary

Are you really going to wear the Hawaii print top that you saved for the vacation you never took? Probably not, right? The first step to organizing clothes is the closet de-clutter. Has the skirt’s hem opened and you’ve put off sewing it for the last three seasons? Have you over-worn the black figure-hugging top that now everyone recognizes easily? Then there may be those one off sentimental pieces you may have held for a couple of decades – ones that you pick, sort and put back, because you can’t let go.

Remind yourself that these clothes are taking up valuable space in your closet and your life, and let them go to charity where they can find a better home. Keep only the things you think you’ll wear next year in different seasons. Wardrobe hacks come in all sizes and de-cluttering forms the base of every single one of them. Sort your clothes for four seasons

Once you are finished with the basic sorting, you will need to pick out seasonal clothes. Humid rains, sweaty summers, dry winters and pleasant falls all need different clothing. Pick out what you can wear in each season, and start adding them to different piles. Keep one pile separately for all season wears and accessories.

A little black dress or a pashmina scarf can be worn across seasons. But make sure you limit the size of this pile, as it is going to take up space in your wardrobe throughout the year. This pile should also see the fastest rotation and addition of new clothes if you want to keep your style fresh.

Storage dos and don’ts

Now that you have your clothes sorted into seasons, you’ll have an idea on how much space the largest pile will take when put into a storage box. Buying storage boxes beforehand will either leave you a few short, or offer extra storage space taken up by spare storage boxes!

Storage boxes follow the LIFO rule - last in first out, for both the items you put in them and the way they are stacked away. To optimize this, keep your favourites of the season in one box and leave it on top. That way you can find it easily just as the weather begins to change. If you are planning to fit in bins or organizers in your wardrobe drawer or under the bed, then take measurements and buy storage boxes accordingly.

Labelling all boxes will make your life easy

This may seem like a tedious task, but it has to be done if you want to find things quickly among the stack of boxes you line up in your garage or attic. Find a labelling pattern you are likely to remember. Doing it by the seasonal names makes the most sense, but add further labelling to separate work wear and home wear.

This tip can be slightly tricky if you over-organize with too many labels which don’t really make sense, forcing you to open them and check repeatedly. To avoid this, keep a maximum of two-level labelling for each season.

Buy transparent storage boxes

This is an interesting tip on our list of storage hacks. Having transparent storage boxes allows you to take a glance at what’s inside, without having to go to the trouble of opening the box. This one will be a great timesaver in the long run.

While choosing storage boxes, don’t pick ones that are too tall. Instead, pick multiple ones that can be stacked well. Also ensure that your plastic boxes seal shut, preventing mildew or moisture from seeping in during storage. This way, you can also prevent bugs from getting to your clothes.

Roll clothes for efficient storage

Some clothes take up less shelf place when folded properly. Others do great when they are rolled and tucked away. Jeans and sweaters, for example, are bulky items and are best kept folded. Stocking and tees are best kept when they are rolled. Socks, on the contrary, may lose their elasticity when kept rolled for a long period. The best way to store them is by laying them flat one over the other.
