You are probably asing yourself, What is the ideology of this style? How can it be used? And how do I compose my surroundings through this style? Don’t worry – these are all questions that we will answer in this Ideabook.

What does Wabi-Sabi really mean?

The Wabi-Sabi style can be defined as a style based on Japanese culture. It is based on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The idea that what is beautiful is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. The characteristics of this style include asymmetry, roughness, irregularity, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, appreciation of the ingenuity of decorative objects, and above all a natural processes.

Through these features that Wabi-Sabi brings, we can say that it is a style that shows us the beauty of unusual shape. This style values a life based on detachment, which can bring us comfort based in the Zen atmosphere it creates. And perhaps the coolest thing about this style is that we can let our imagination fly and expand on endless possibilities by mixing various products and creating something totally personal and unrepeatable, which subsequently transforms your home into a unique and charming atmosphere.

Colours

Japanese tradition tells us that bright colours tire the eye, which in turn tires the body and soul. Wabi-Sabi takes its colour scheme from nature itself, as this style is all about the simplicity and appreciation of natural objects and processes. The colours that are used in this interior design style are tranquil earth tones and neutrals. So soft slate greys, calming browns, greens, and yellows allow the eyes to relax. Just like in nature, the Wabi-Sabi style uses multidimensional swatches of colour that are never what they first appear to be. A grey stone slab close up shows us speckled, almost crystalline bits, ranging from deeper to dark hues of the same colour to practically white. A brown brick might show us specks of orange and red blended gracefully into the larger scheme of the quiet overall brown. It is also believed that seeing and observing colour in this way will teach you how to see more clearly.

Wall textures

Wabi-Sabi texture is varied, rough, stimulating, and alive. As this style boats the beauty of imperfections, chips, unevenness, and even warps in walls and furniture are highly welcomed. When you think of Wabi-Sabi, its closest Western counterpart is the rustic interior design scheme. And when we think of rustic, we think of nature, unfinished yet refined wooden features, and of course brick and concrete touches. These natural elements that clearly show the passage of time add the textures of Mother Nature into your home. The idea of rough, varied, and uneven textures in the Wabi-Sabi design principle is that through this, the mind will be able to enjoy the randomness and imperfections of the home while simultaneously feeling the imperfections in our lives.

Furniture

Unlike other chic interior design schemes, Wabi-Sabi décor inspires a minimalist approach that focuses more on the people who live in a space. But as we have mentioned before, it’s all about bringing the natural inside the home for harmony and balance. So the furniture of a Wabi-Sabi inspired home remains simple and unique and is made from natural elements like wood and iron. Hand made or even custom furniture made from wood with exposed imperfections are perfect if you want to achieve this style at home. Exposed, crude, and hammered metal hardware and surfaces give a rustic and natural feel to the home. These surfaces are often over-warned or hand polished antiques. Simplicity is also an important element of the furniture. Anything too intricate or modish takes away from the core concept of the design style.

Floor materials

Floor material is another important element of the Wabi-Sabi style. The floor is the foundation of any room. All elements of the room rest upon it, literally and figuratively. You will never see perfectly polished, sparkling marble flooring in a home that is trying to take things back to the more natural, as this pristine and shiny material does not suggest the beauty in imperfection, profundity of nature, or the natural cycle of growth, decay, or death. Clean, simple floors made from natural or organic materials are the most fitting for Wabi-Sabi interiors. Man made marble flooring only boasts the opposite extreme – striving for perfection. Thus, only natural elements are used in the flooring material such as concrete or wood. Tile, stone, concrete, cork, bamboo, or hardwoods are perfectly acceptable and very desirable if you want to achieve this look in your home.

Accessories

When it comes to accessorizing your Wabi-Sabi inspired interior, you know you want to use natural or handmade accessories with materials such as clay, raw cotton, and aged wood. Accessories with shapes that are not quite symmetrical and use colours and textures that emphasize an unrefined or simple style are what you want to look for. A good example of this embodiment can be seen in some styles of Japanese pottery, which are often rustic and simple looking because of their earth toned colour, uneven shape, and chips in the vessels. Your accessories should be underplayed and modest, quiet, and undeclared in their beauty. Simple, humble, and nostalgic items are encouraged, such as pottery or rocks. The important thing to remember about decorating the Wabi-Sabi way is that even if it’s not chipped or worn (yet), doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it. The important thing is to feel good about how you accessorize and to make your space as harmonious as you can by using the elements of nature.
