To create a home that is both luxurious and environmentally sustainable is indeed a challenge but architectural firm MJ Kanny Architects has managed to achieve this with the creation of this beautiful bungalow in Kampung Tunku, Malaysia. Emphasis was given on creating the illusion of space for this family home built on two levels with a high ceiling living room acting as a main “connector” and anchor to all the interior spaces.
While the living room, dining area and kitchen were placed close to each other in a charming open plan design with the courtyard pool and lounge close to it, the private spaces are subtly connected. These ancillary spaces including bedrooms and entertainment room upstairs are connected to the lap pool and garden through a staircase between both levels. The house was constructed using modular concrete blocks while paint and cladding materials were used sparingly to showcase natural beauty in a minimalist style.
This is the night view of this beautiful home with lights creating a welcoming glow all around. Vertical metal mesh details of this house are balanced with an open slanting roof above the balcony space on the right. An eclectic combination of white, brown and cream make the façade look uniquely modern and help it stand out among other homes of similar size in the neighbourhood.
To protect the sleeping quarters and other private areas of the house from street view and sunrays in the summer, a metal grill was implemented in the final design made from weathered perforated steel panels.
From this angle of the lower wing of this bungalow one can have a clear view of its living room, dining area and kitchen / breakfast bar at the far end. We love the design of its charming courtyard lap pool which is connected to almost all the rooms on this level.
The bar stools opposite the kitchen island have been strategically placed to allow guests to serve themselves from the wine glasses strung above in a stylish manner. The
modern kitchen has all necessary cooking and serving gadgets within close proximity to serve family members and guests and enjoy great bonding time together.
This kitchen has all the fixings to cook a perfect meal and entertain guests. We like the colorful backsplash and red accents used throughout this space. The lighting is another bonous to this room!

The timber pavement here subtly draws the line between private and public spaces of the house. The minimalist steel staircase leading upstairs connects both levels of the house.
The private entertainment room designed with built-in cushioned seats is perfect for the whole family to enjoy late night movie binges. The interesting lighting arrangement and roof design is designed to appear like a movie theatre.
This cosy window seat was built with cantilevered design in the main bedroom with sliding glass windows and privacy provided by the metal screen outside.
This open layout bathroom has concrete vent-blocks that gives privacy within its confines while allowing ventilation from the glass skylight on the roof.
This open staircase connecting both levels gives a bird's eye view of the backyard garden and pool.
This view of the living room spread across two levels with glass barricades gives subtle glimpses of the outside neighbourhood through the steel sunshade trellis.
This poolside lounge is more of a comfort zone for relaxation and family chats as it forms a seamless relationship with private sections of the house.
We are now in the backyard of the house that is sheltered on two sides by the large house and boundary wall on the outer perimeter of the property. Lighting arrangement around the house and glass exteriors keep the backyard well lit even late night.
