It’s no surprise that minimalism is considered the go-to style option when you want to embrace a cleaner, more subtle look for your interiors. After all, when done correctly, the results are calming and more inviting without being cold or dull (as any expert Interior Designer will agree).

And we especially love it when the minimalist style thrives in a living room, since that’s where we, you know, live! That’s why we’ve gathered these 12 tips (and their accompanying images) to show you how easy it can be to style up a minimalist living room that’s trendy, sociable, and welcoming.

1. Go with white (or pale) walls

Busy walls distract; walls painted / wallpapered in a subtle neutral / earthy tone are all about a relaxing ambience.

2. Add subtle pops of colour for character

Remember that an all-white room can easily seem clinical or cold. Style it up ever so slightly with some cool greys, soft blues and greens, or other eye-catching tones.

Keep in mind that pops of dark colour (like dark grey sofas and matching drapery) can induce a strong sense of drama without diminishing that minimalist look you’re after.

3. Use restraint with your furniture

Keep furniture pieces like end tables and sofas on the down-low. They need to complement that clean-cut look you’re going for, not distract from it.

4. Focus on scale

Minimalism is ideal for small rooms, since the emphasis is on simple pieces and open spaces. For instance, ditch that bulky coffee table and instead go for stacking nesting tables.

5. The fewer pieces, the better

A minimalist living room has very few pieces, full stop! Remember that your space is for discussion, debate and relaxation – no decorating diversions allowed.

6. Store items out of sight

Most of us have stacks of magazines, remote controls, take-out menus and other random elements lying around. With a minimalist living room, those elements need to be out of sight to draw the eye towards open / empty spaces, not clutter.

Come up with a simple plan for keeping those elements away, such as an attractive basket or other type of storage bin.

7. Get a floating shelf

A floating shelf (or something similar to this built-in credenza) is perfect for making a living room feel more relaxed, organised, and modern. But don’t go overboard: stick a book or two, a plant, and a handful of knickknacks on it, and nothing more.

8. Highlight your favourite art pieces

Your favourite painting or sculpture will thrive in a minimalist living room, since there’s a neutral-coloured wall behind it and lots of space around it. Just be sure that you don’t have more than two eye-catching pieces, depending on the size of your living room.

9. Bring in delicious texture

Minimalism can easily seem dull. To add visual splendour, treat your wall, furnishings, or some accessories like a canvas and add some texture.

Doesn’t this focal wall with its exposed brick just jump out so fantastically?

10. Play with some patterns

Since there’s very little to distract the eye in a minimalist room, play up some interesting lines or geometric details here and there.

11. Add a touch of green

Two or three bright green houseplants in a minimalist living room will immediately make the space feel clean, fresh and welcoming.

Without warm lighting, a minimalist living room (or any space, for that matter) can quickly feel cold and uninviting around sunset. Consider some ambient lighting like a floor lamp or two, a table lamp here and there, and some modern pendants to up the layered lighting effect.
