Nobody likes cleaning day, but apart from hiring a professional cleaner who actually likes to get rid of dirt, we have no choice. But of course cleaning day doesn’t have to come with the usual amount of blood, sweat and tears, as there exists many ways to ensure some extra shine and sparkle around the house – and here are 12 of them…

1. Treat your stainless steel surfaces to a regular rubdown with warm water and a lint-free cloth.

2. Rub your tap with plain flour, rinse with water, buff with a soft cloth, and welcome back the sparkle.

3. Add a splash of vinegar to the water you use to clean your windows.

4. Use newspaper (not paper towels) for drying the windows – just wear gloves, as that ink can get everywhere.

5. For indoor concrete surfaces, opt for a mop with a bucket of warm water mixed with a mild cleaner – stay away from ammonia, bleach or any highly acidic substance.

6. Be sure not to skip those hidden shelves or spaces on cleaning day!

7. Wet your porcelain sink with warm water, sprinkle baking soda and rub it in with a soft cloth/sponge until it forms a paste – it will remove stains and soap scum.

8. Wooden shutters require a dusting, a wipe-off with a microfiber cloth and a spraying with furniture polish for extra shine – no soap or water!

9. Use a leaf rake to collect debris on steps and corners of your pool, as they can affect your pH, cause stains and lead to algae growth.

10. Remove pet hair from upholstered furniture with dampened rubber gloves by running your hand over the surfaces. A slightly wet sponge also works.

11. Dab that carpet stain with a cleaning solution and clean cloth or sponge by blotting (not rubbing) it from the outside of the stain inward.

12. Remove a wine stain from cotton fabrics by immediately sprinkling the stained area with enough salt to soak up the liquid. Soak the fabric for 1 hour in cold water, and launder as usual.
